Kidney Injury

A Kidney Injury May Occur After Exposure to Dangerous Drugs

A kidney injury is the most common of injuries along the urinary tract. The usual cause of kidney injuries is from a blunt force, possibly resulting from an auto accident, a fall, or participating in sports.

Kidney injuries also can be caused by dangerous drugs. Visicol and OsmoPrep are prescription oral sodium phosphate (OSP) medications that reportedly have been linked with a type of kidney injury known as acute phosphate nephropathy. Many people take these medications as a bowel prep before a colonoscopy.

Because of the risk of kidney injury, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the manufacturers of the drugs to include "black box warnings" — the FDA's strongest warning — on their labels.

The FDA found similar risks associated with the use of over-the-counter bowel prep products.

C.B. Fleet Company, responding to the FDA warning, announced a voluntary recall of its OTC products, including: Fleet® Phospho-soda® and Fleet® Phospho-soda® EZ-Prep® Bowel Cleansing System.

Who is At Risk of Kidney Injury?

The FDA warns that people are at an increased risk of developing acute phosphate nephropathy with the use of OSP bowel cleansing products if they:

  • Are 55 or older;
  • Are dehydrated;
  • Have a history of kidney problems;
  • Have delayed bowel emptying.

Also at risk of kidney injury are people who take certain medications that affect kidney function, such as diuretic (fluid) pills, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (medications that lower blood pressure), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs, used to treat high blood pressure, heart or kidney failure), and possibly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS, like ibuprofen or other arthritis medications).

Symptoms can include malaise, lethargy, drowsiness, decreased amount of urine, and swelling of the ankles, feet and legs. Early stages may not be associated with any symptoms, and may only be detected by blood tests to measure kidney function.
