Recalls Issued for Medtronic Defibrillator, Lead Wires
The Medtronic Company in October 2007 recalled its Sprint Fidelis lead wire, a thin electrical cable that connects an implantable heart defibrillator to the patient’s heart. Medtronic supplied the device to other defibrillator manufacturers, including Guidant, Boston Scientific and St. Jude. In some cases, the leads would split, or “fracture,” causing false signals to be sent to the defibrillator. The device delivered inappropriate shocks to the heart. Patients with defective lead wires reported the following side effects:
- Multiple shocks
- Lightheadedness
- Fainting
- Palpitations
The defective wires could lead to defibrillator malfunction, loss of output, and possibly death of the patient. Medtronic in March 2009 revealed the deaths of at least 13 Sprint Fidelis patients. The deaths of four patients were linked to efforts by surgeons to remove the product.
